What is Human-Centered Design?

Human-centered design (HCD, also human-centred design, as used in ISO standards) is an approach to problem-solving commonly used in design, management, and development frameworks that create solutions to problems by involving the human perspective in all steps of the problem-solving process. Human involvement typically takes place in observing the problem within context, brainstorming, conceptualizing, developing, and implementing the solution. REWORD

Introduction

The digitization of the healthcare sector has seen a phenomenal increase in the last few years. Of course, we can pinpoint the cause of the pandemic. The social distancing rules forced healthcare to come up with a way to treat patients and social distance at the same time.

Such examples include telemedicine, fitness, and health tracking applications, wearable trackers and so much more[i]. As the use of such devices and applications increases, patients demand a more consumer-friendly interface that allows easy accessibility to their medical records.[ii]

If these demands are not met adequately, they may lead to the failure of this new application of digitization.

Current Application

Currently, the healthcare industry faces a great challenge when it comes to documentation. So much so that the time for actual patient interaction has significantly decreased because healthcare providers are consumed by updating medical records.

A simple solution to this problem exists in creating a user-friendly interface designed to take care of such tasks for them. This will allow physicians more time to deal with patients, conduct research and benefit the healthcare industry in many other ways. Additionally, the decrease in paperwork might lead to lesser levels of burnout, as a result, there will be fewer medical errors.

Recommendations

Recently digital health specialists have noted certain areas of improvement when it comes to the user interface in healthcare applications/devices. Some of these are listed below:

Simple and Logical UI

This is a priority as it is well known how busy healthcare providers are. This is why the UI (user interface) should be designed in a more efficient way. This can be done by providing access to frequently used files on the homepage. This minimizes the number of clicks and loading time between pages and as a result saves precious time.[iii]

Well-spaced system updates

This is of utmost importance in fields like healthcare. Why? Because medical errors are known to be the third leading cause of death in the United States. Providing healthcare systems with software that is consistently being updated without giving the user time to get used to it may lead to an increase in these errors. Furthermore, such updates may cause software interfaces in medicine to crash unexpectedly at a fatal time. This may also add to the casualty rate.

Autosave

This feature will allow healthcare providers to have some peace of mind when conducting work through software interfaces in medicine. Since it is very likely for people in this profession to come across sudden interruptions. With autosave, they will not have to worry about losing important data or diagnostic notes during events such as trauma or life resuscitation. Additionally, this is also a time-saving feature as they will not have to reproduce data like doctors’ notes in case of unexpected interruptions.

Conclusion

At SofTx Innovations, we aid the transition of traditional healthcare systems to cloud-based, centralized, cost-effective, and portable solutions. We understand the need for a highly unique and efficient user interface for healthcare providers and even healthcare receivers. Our focus is to provide more convenient solutions for everyone.
